I am a khipu

Looking not to unravel today
instead to undulate my tongue to say
words tied together, not neatly, a tangle
,a promise worn like a bangle.

In the high cordillera of central Peru,
to keep their story true
they tie string in knots to keep accounts
of a life of promise in varied amounts
to hold the mistakes measured through

But with care and with time, the accounting takes a shape
the unmistakable shape of art tumbles in
Tied knots. They record
Twice as long as half as much,
many more to go
adding 'til the final say
a khipu left to show.

I am a khipu
